Course-Embedded Assignment Reflection for EDLD 5363

Self–Assessment

I learned how to create photo/video stories with Windows Movie Maker program which was a great opportunity for me to use in the classroom and personally. This course could easily have had a part I and II so that we could have more time to achieve absolute success but it gave me the foundation to improve upon. I took note of how to capture video shoots and actually used the tips while making my group’s Public Service Announcement (PSA) Video. "Crouch down with the camera just below your knee. Now slowly stand up and as you move, bring the camera up towards head height (Peters, 2006). This advice really did work well for our project along with many other tips. I will continue to work on achieving a smoother transition in my photo stories and voice narration. I wasn’t too impressed with my voice after recording it on Audacity. I want a voice that really demands the attention of the audience. This is something I will have to practice to achieve.
Learn as a Learner
The PSA that my group and I created turned out better than I ever thought it would. Prior planning and using a script really made all the work transition together smoothly. It was great working with three other people in different parts of the state and world. One of our group members was actually located in his home country of Morocco on vacation during this project. We used oovoo Web Video conferencing to communicate and a wiki to post our ideas and files. This conference call gave me more experience with video conferencing and with the oovoo program because I had never heard of this one before. My students are now using Skype for homework and personal reasons. I couldn’t wait to use this concept in my classroom. Multimedia certainly has the potential to extend the amount and type of information available to learners (Shank, P., n.d.). The students and I created a PSA for the LOTC program that we use to inform students, parents, and educators about what the program’s extracurricular activities. They were very excited about seeing the works of their hands and their faces in the video. It was an awesome experience for all of us.
Lifelong Learning Skills
PSAs can be an effective way to teach students how to focus content on a specific topic and goal while learning the video production process (Adobe, n.d.). Educators can always implement technology into our curriculum regardless of the subject matter. Where there's a will there's a way. It's very important to get the attention of our students and to keep their attention. Using technology is definitely on their level of thinking/learning and would be very beneficial to any classroom.
